Individualization of (business) informatics exercisesThe aim of the two-semester module “Business Informatics” is to enable students to solve data literacy tasks with self-written programs and to transfer the techniques to new tasks. Due to different levels of prior knowledge, the tasks are often only optimal for some of the students. Overchallenged students do not manage to solve tasks independently, while underchallenged students have no incentive to learn beyond the minimum requirements. These motivation problems often lead to learning being postponed until shortly before the exam, which frequently results in failure.
The IBIX learning platform supports individual learning. The platform provides programming tasks with sample data that enable a step-by-step approach to the solutions. IBIX automatically evaluates the solutions by comparing them with target results and shows how many tasks have been solved correctly in the web interface. This motivates students to improve their solutions. Sample solutions are not provided, but there is support in classroom exercises and by e-mail.
IBIX also enables weekly pre-examination work, which is included in the module examination. Students can generate a preliminary task that has to be solved and uploaded within one hour. Immediate assessment motivates revision within the deadline.
The use of IBIX is logged in accordance with data protection regulations, which enables the analysis of learning behavior. This allows us to see when and where students are studying, which tasks they are working on and how participation in exercises and previous work affect the module examination.
In the long term, IBIX should be able to make personalized suggestions for the next tasks through learning behavior analyses, so that students who learn quickly need fewer steps, while others go through all the necessary steps.
